Mentally Ill Man Fell Ill in Police Cell. .

Philipsburg:--- A mentally ill elderly man who was held at the police holding cell in Philipsburg had to be transported the St. Maarten Medical Center on Monday morning by ambulance. SMN News learnt that the prisoner fell ill while in police custody. So far, police did not release any information on the prisoner. It is still not clear if the man committed any crime and why he has been detained.[More....]
Wrongly accused suspects claim police ill-treatment
PHILIPSBURG--Two men H.B. and D.P. claim police brutality after being wrongly arrested as suspects in an armed robbery Sunday evening. The Daily Herald reported in its Monday, December 21, edition that the two men had been arrested by the Police Zero-Tolerance Team after police received reports that they had robbed either a Chinese restaurant or a Chinese national on Back Street. FORGOTTEN TAMILS GET NAF 10.000.

Philipsburg:---The court of first instance has ordered, on November 23 of this year, the Netherlands Antilles to pay a total sum of 10.000 Naf to the two men from Sri Lanka, that were recently sent back to their country after spending more than 6 months on the floor of the holding cells at the local police station in Philipsburg, an additional 3800 NAF has to be paid by the authorities for legal fees and court costs The judge stated that that their custody was unlawful. The authorities claimed that it was not possible to repatriate them any sooner. The judge found that hard to believe with the many flights per week from St.Maarten to the major airports(hubs) in Europe and beyond.[More....]
Police Internal Affairs Investigation Takes Turn ---Claims that CID Log for 2002 disappeared.

Philipsburg: --- The investigation that was taking place with investigators from the Police Internal Affairs Department from Curacao has been completed and the officers are scheduled to leave St. Maarten today (Wednesday). SMN News has been reliably informed that the investigation took some turns as it relates to the alleged missing documents from the CID department. Reliably information reaching SMN News indicates that the investigators are allegedly questioning the circumstances of the disappearance of the CID logbook for the year 2002. It is not clear when the KPSSS realized this log was missing and if action was taken prior to now.[More....]
Meetings to be held with Management Team of Police Force---- No Decision on Pannflek’s Return to Police Force.
SMNN - Philipsburg:--- Minister of Justice Magali Jacoba confirmed that former Assistant Chief Commissioner of Police Richard Panneflek has sent her a letter requesting to return to the management of the Police Organization KPSSS. Jacoba said Panneflek was allowed to assist the island government of St. Maarten with some work and he indicated in his letter that he has completed that work and wished to return to his job.
The Minister said upon receipt of Panneflek’s letter she sent a letter to the island government of St. Maarten to inquire if Panneflek has completed the task he was requested to do. She said so far she has not received any response from the island government and as such she has not taken any decision as to whether Panneflek would return to the police management. She said whenever, she receives that answer she would make a decision if Panneflek could return to the KPSSS.
The police acted 'appropriately' in arresting 'school bus' suspect
PHILIPSBURG - Police management said Friday that officers had “appropriately” arrested a teenager suspected of ambushing a school bus, despite claims from witnesses that the young man had been abused. Windward Islands Police Force KPSSS Acting Chief Commissioner Ademar Doran said J.G. (19), the main suspect in the violent ambush of a school bus three weeks ago, was “in good health” after officers arrested him on Bush Road Tuesday.[More....]
Witnesses say police assaulted teen during Bush Road arrest
PHILIPSBURG - Bush Road residents claim police assaulted a nineteen-year-old Tuesday while arresting him for a vicious attack last month. J.G.'s mother told The Daily Herald Thursday that she had not talked to her son since the day police had confronted him outside a Robbie's Lottery outlet and attacked him. This newspaper understands that police believe G. was among a group of young men who ambushed a school bus on Bush Road almost three weeks ago. PHILIPS ASKED TO PROVE ALLEGATIONS ---INVESTIGATIONS TOOK TURN OFFICER NOW A SUSPECT.
SMNN - Philipsburg: --- Detective Carlton Philips who went public against the alleged illegalities and victimization, taking place within the management of the police force may well have to brace himself for a long battle. According to information received, Philips who is presently on vacation was served with a long letter from the police management who indicated to him that he would have to prove the allegations he made against the management of the police department.
In an invited comment, Minister of Justice Magali Jacoba said an investigation is underway regarding the open letter the officer in question sent to the media. Jacoba said because an investigation is taking place she is not in a position to further discuss the issue. Asked if there would be an investigation to see if Philips was engaged in any wrongdoing while working at the CID in 2002. Jacoba said she was not aware of that incident. However, the Minister would be meeting with Assistant Chief Commissioner of Police Ademar Doran over the weekend to discuss matters pertaining to the management of KPSSS.

Philipsburg: --- Lack of leadership skills, lack of trust, and personal victimization are only some of the reasons why the management team of the St. Maarten Police Force (KPSSS) is falling apart. SMN News has been reliably informed that at least one member of the management team Hildo Martina has already indicated that he would tender his resignation from the management team. Sources say Martina has already submitted a medical certificate to the management of the police force on Tuesday. It is understood that Martina would declare his intentions to the management and other justice heads on Monday and Tuesday next week when the management and other stakeholders meet to discuss the status of the police force.[More....]
